Jax State HC Charles Kelly Shares Insight Into Caleb Nix’s Game
During Conference USA Media Day, I asked Jacksonville State head coach Charles Kelly about what makes Caleb Nix special as a leader of his defense.
Coach Kelly’s response: “First of all, it's like having another coach on the field. He is very smart. Caleb is a very good athlete. He's got good size, good quickness, he's got very good instincts, he's a good tackler, [and] he plays the ball in the deep part of the field. What was amazing about the season that Caleb Nix had last year is he was less than a year coming off of an ACL injury. That, to me, tells you a lot about what kind of guy he is. But he is a very smart young man. He was a high school quarterback, so he understands how people are trying to attack us, and he can make adjustments on the field.”
Caleb Nix plays safety for Jacksonville State and is coming off an exceptional 2025 season, where he totaled 63 tackles, 7 pass deflections, 4 interceptions, 4 tackles for loss, and 3 fumble recoveries. His play earned him 1st-team All-Conference USA honors. He is now one of the returning leaders for the 2026 Jax State football team. Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is his brother.
